Petra in southern Jordan is an important archaeological site and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the largest tourist attraction in Jordan and was not discovered by Europeans until 1812. It is home to thousands of archaeological sites, including the Crusader-era castle, the Roman Theatre in Amman, and the pink city of Petra carved out of sandstone cliffs.
